Digital travel authorisation for UK

UK ETA: The New Digital Travel Requirement

The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a new digital travel permission required for nationals of visa-exempt countries. Similar to the US ESTA, it is part of the UK's digital border modernisation programme.

Who Needs an ETA?

Citizens of countries that currently do not need a visa for short visits to the UK will need an ETA before travelling. This is being rolled out in phases:

  • GCC nationals: Already required since 2024

  • Non-European nationals from visa-exempt countries: Required from 2025

  • EU, EEA, and Swiss nationals: Being phased in through 2026

How to Apply

  • Apply online through the official UK ETA website or the UK ETA mobile app

  • Provide your passport details and a facial photograph

  • Pay the fee of £10

  • Most applications are processed within 3 working days

  • Apply well in advance of your travel date

Validity

An ETA is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It allows multiple visits of up to 6 months each. When you renew your passport, you will need to obtain a new ETA.
