UK and Europe - EU Settlement Scheme

EU Settlement Scheme: Protect Your Right to Live in the UK

The EU Settlement Scheme allows EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens who were living in the UK by 31 December 2020 to continue living and working in the UK permanently.

Settled Status

If you had 5 years continuous residence by 31 December 2020, you are eligible for Settled Status. This gives you an indefinite right to remain in the UK — equivalent to ILR. You can work, study, access benefits, and travel freely.

Pre-Settled Status

If you had less than 5 years residence, you receive Pre-Settled Status, valid for 5 years. You must apply for Settled Status before it expires. If you fail to do so, you may lose your right to remain.

Late Applications

While the deadline was 30 June 2021, the Home Office continues to accept late applications where there are reasonable grounds for the delay. Reasons include: being a child, having a serious medical condition, being a victim of domestic abuse, or simply not being aware of the requirement.

Family Members

  • Spouses and civil partners of EU citizens

  • Children and grandchildren under 21

  • Dependent parents and grandparents

  • Durable partners (unmarried but in a long-term relationship)
