UK Ancestry Visa: Return to Your British Roots

If you are a Commonwealth citizen with a grandparent born in the UK, the Ancestry Visa is one of the simplest routes to living and working in Britain. It is granted for 5 years and leads directly to settlement.

Eligibility

  • You must be a Commonwealth citizen aged 17 or over

  • At least one grandparent must have been born in the UK, Channel Islands, or Isle of Man

  • You must be able to work and intend to seek employment in the UK

  • You must be able to support yourself without recourse to public funds

Birth certificates and documents for ancestry visa

Evidence Required

  • Your birth certificate

  • Your parent's birth certificate

  • Your grandparent's birth certificate showing UK birth

  • Proof of your Commonwealth citizenship

  • Evidence you can support yourself in the UK

Path to Settlement

After 5 years on an Ancestry Visa, apply for ILR. After a further 12 months, apply for British citizenship. This is one of the most straightforward immigration journeys available.
