Long Residence ILR: The 10-Year Route to Settlement
If you have lived in the UK continuously and lawfully for 10 years, you may qualify for Indefinite Leave to Remain under the long residence rule — regardless of which visa categories you held during that time.
Requirements
10 years continuous lawful residence in the UK
No single absence exceeding 6 months
Total absences should not exceed 18 months over the 10-year period
Good character requirement
English language at B1 level
Pass the Life in the UK test
Who Uses This Route?
This is commonly used by people who have accumulated 10 years across different visa categories — for example, Student Visa then Skilled Worker Visa. It is also used by those on visa routes that do not have their own settlement provision.
Calculating Your Qualifying Date
This can be surprisingly complex. Gaps in leave, overstaying, and absences all affect the calculation. Our team meticulously reviews your immigration history to determine your exact qualifying date.
